Contractor FAQs
Should I operate as a limited company or sole trader?
At contract rates above approximately EUR 50,000 per year, a limited company almost always delivers a better outcome. Lower corporation tax (12.5% on trading profits vs up to 40% income tax), limited liability, and salary/dividend flexibility make it significantly more tax-efficient.
How much can I take as salary and dividend?
The optimal split depends on your annual contract income and personal circumstances. A typical structure takes a salary up to the USC threshold and extracts remaining profits as dividends — minimising PRSI and USC while remaining fully Revenue-compliant.
What expenses can I claim as a contractor?
Business expenses wholly and exclusively for the purpose of the contract — including home office (proportion), business phone, professional subscriptions, hardware and software, and business mileage. We advise on what is claimable and ensure your records are robust.
Is there an Irish equivalent of IR35?
Ireland does not have IR35. Revenue tests employment vs self-employment based on the nature of the contract relationship. We advise on structuring contracts to withstand Revenue scrutiny.
Can you handle my accounting if I am based outside Dublin?
Yes. We serve contractors across all 26 counties. Everything is managed online — securely and efficiently.
