VAT Returns FAQs

How often do I need to file VAT in Ireland?

The standard taxable period is bi-monthly (every two months), commencing on the first day of January, March, May, July, September, and November. The Collector-General may authorise four-monthly returns if your annual VAT liability is between €3,001 and €14,400, or six-monthly returns if your annual liability is €3,000 or less. We confirm your correct period at registration.

What is the VAT registration threshold in Ireland?

The threshold is EUR 85,000 for goods and EUR 42,500 for services in a 12-month period. If you expect to exceed these, you should register before the threshold is reached. Voluntary registration is also possible.

Do I need to charge VAT if I am selling to EU customers?

It depends. B2B sales to VAT-registered EU businesses use reverse charge — no Irish VAT charged. B2C sales to EU consumers require you to register for OSS (One Stop Shop) once you exceed EUR 10,000 annual cross-border sales.

What happens if I miss a VAT deadline?

Revenue imposes surcharges for late filing — typically 5% of the VAT liability, up to EUR 12,695. Late payments also accrue interest at 0.0274% per day. Fixed penalties also apply for failures such as not keeping proper books (€4,000) or not registering as an accountable person (€4,000). We track every deadline so this never happens.

Can you handle VAT if my accountant previously managed it?

Yes. We contact Revenue on your behalf, set up online access, and take over all VAT obligations. Handover is seamless.
